Frequently asked questions

What is in the UK lux levels guide?

A 7 page PDF with the BS EN 12464-1:2021 required and modified maintained illuminance, UGR limit and Ra for warehouses, stores, metal working and assembly, offices and indoor car parks, plus how to measure lux levels and what to plan for.

How many lux does a warehouse need?

BS EN 12464-1:2021 gives 150 lux required (200 lux modified) on the floor of rack storage, 75 lux (100 lux modified) vertically on the rack face, 300 lux (500 lux modified) for packing and grouping areas and 200 lux (300 lux modified) for loading and unloading areas.

What is the difference between the required and the modified value?

The required value is the minimum. The modified value is the level to plan for when context modifiers apply, for example when visual work is critical, errors are costly or the task goes on for an unusually long time. It is not an upper limit.
