6 hidden benefits: why cold storage should upgrade to LED
Cold stores and chilled distribution centres run around the clock, and every watt of heat from the lighting is a watt the refrigeration has to remove. That makes lighting a bigger lever in cold storage than in an ambient warehouse.
1. Fittings rated for the cold
Not every fitting is designed for sub-zero spaces. PS-UFO-MAX is rated for operation from -40°C to +60°C, and Polaris lists cold stores as one of its applications.
2. Less heat for the refrigeration to remove
LED high bays turn more of their power into light than older metal halide or fluorescent fittings, so less power is released as heat inside the cold store.
3. Light only when someone is there
Many cold store zones are visited only briefly. A plug-in PIR and daylight sensor on PS-UFO-MAX dims or switches the light when nobody is present, so lights are not burning in empty chambers.
4. Full light straight away
LED fittings reach full output as soon as they are switched on, with no warm-up time like metal halide lamps, which is what makes presence sensors practical in a cold store.
5. Sealed and robust
PS-UFO-MAX is IP65 and IK08, for dust, moisture and knocks from handling equipment.
6. Fewer lamp changes in a difficult environment
Working at height in a freezer is slow and uncomfortable. PS-UFO-MAX is rated L80B10 >50,000 hours (TM-21) and carries a 5-year warranty, which means far fewer maintenance visits.
