Why should all led light buying decisions include lumen/watt ?

When visiting customers we always make a point of focusing on lumen / watt. After many years focus on watt as the main indicator of how bright a light fitting will be, the newest led developments are changing this notion rapidly. Led lights are pushing the amount of lumen/watt at incredible speed and after reaching 100 Lumen/watt in 2010, led lights are now considerably brighter than traditional incandescent and fluorescent lights.

As a rule on thumb you can get 300% as much light from a good Led Light than from incandescent light. I.e. you can exchange a 400w metal halide high bay for a 150w led high bay.

As a rule on thumb you can get 200% as much light from a good led light than from fluorescent light. I.e. you can exchange a 70w tube light for a 25w led tube.

Lumen/watt – Energy efficiency

A lumen is a measure of how much visible light is emitted by a source. Lumens per watt (lm/W) refers to the energy efficiency of lighting: how much visible light you get for a given amount of electricity.
